My Reflection on Multimedia Learning Principles
For me, the principle that everyone’s brain has a limited capacity is something I’ve always known, learning is inefficient when the amount of new information received at once exceeds the brain’s capacity. Through the study of this module, Mayer has divided the sources of cognitive load into more specific and detailed, external cognitive load caused by poor design, internal cognitive load related to task difficulty, and germane cognitive load. Dual coding theory is also a principle I have never known before but have felt in some real-life situations. when I watch a movie in a movie theater that has both images and subtitles, I have a hard time looking at the subtitles as well as the pictures at the same time, and usually either look at the image and listen to the subtitles or look at the subtitles and imagine the image.
Logisim Evolution for Digital Circuit
I created a screencast on ScreenCastify, it’s a tutorial about a software called Logisim Evolution(posted at the bottom). According to the principle of extraneous cognitive load, I tried to obey the coherence principle, stay focused on the topic, and get rid of irrelevant information. Based on the modality principle, I use narration instead of showing the words to reduce the intrinsic cognitive load.
Challenges and Successes in My Frist Screencast Video
The principle that kept coming to me when I was making this video was that it couldn’t be off-topic and that all of the words and images had to be connected to the software, which is my topic of logisim progression. Since this was merely the first introductory lesson video, the questions were designed to be not challenging than what would be expected of students at this point, it’s for reducing the internal cognitive load. The principle of redundancy proved to be the most challenging for me to apply in my first video creation. Given that many of the details I supplied seemed to duplicate their explanation, this may have been caused by my early Chinese education.. All things considered, screen recording and video editing both have a great deal of space for development.

I think you did a great job of using Dual Coding theory in your video, the information you were saying was relevant to what was happening on screen, however you weren’t just narrating what was going on you also provided insight into the benifits of Logisim Evolution. Your video was simple and engaging, amazing job!

I think your blog post is really well done. When doing your screen cast I think you did a great job at staying on task and making it simple to understand for people with little information on the topic. The blog post and video were clear, well written, and easily understandable

Hi Linke,
Thanks for sharing this great video with us. I totally agree with you. One of the most important challenges is to keep all content on-topic and directly relevant to the tutorial. However, it can be tricky, as providing clear explanations without duplicating information is a fine line to walk. This requires carful planning and enrich knowledge reserves. Also, we should think from students’s perspective in order to avoid Germane Cognitive Load!
